Outdoor advertising has been part of the Foundation’s toolkit for years. The Foundation’s equipment ledger records a September 2021 purchase from Clear Channel and SignTex for billboards and a mural honouring first responders, and campaign artwork has run on Houston displays since.

The connection runs through the board. Foundation chairman Lee Vela is Vice President of Public Affairs at Clear Channel Outdoor, and the relationship has given a small, volunteer-run charity a citywide voice it could not otherwise afford.

Why visibility is the constraint.

The Foundation is fully volunteer-run, with more than ninety cents of every dollar going straight to equipment. That efficiency leaves almost nothing for marketing. Donated and discounted outdoor placements are how most Houstonians learn that the fire department has an equipment gap at all.
